The Instigators: Celebrating 10 Years of Kettle Art

Please join us on Thursday, November 5th, 7:00 – 10:00pm for the opening reception and celebration of our support of local culture over the past ten years.

Call them what you will: rabble rousers, provocateurs, radicals, or champions. The art world has always needed them, and Dallas is no exception. In November of 2005, a small group of unrepresented artists joined forces to open Kettle’s doors, while simultaneously launching careers that have helped to illuminate the rich and vast array of talent our city has to offer. Co-founder Kirk Hopper served as art consultant and financial adviser before establishing Kirk Hopper Fine Art in 2008, also located in DeepEllum.

Conceived by artist and muralist Frank Campagna as a two-pronged concept, the gallery’s mission was to 1) offer opportunities for regional artists and patrons alike to experience art in a casual and supportive atmosphere, and 2) return the Deep Ellum neighborhood back to its artistic roots.

With this goal in mind, Kettle has proudly collaborated with organizations and arts groups across the North Texas region such as the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, American Society of Media Photographers Dallas, Art Conspiracy, Art Hash, ArtPlace America, Cykochik, D Magazine’s Big D Reads, Dallas Art Dealers Association, Dallas Association of Young Lawyers, Dallas Observer, Dallas Video Festival, Deep Ellum Arts Festival, Deep Ellum Community Association, Deep Ellum Wine Walk, END Design, Folksie/Make Shop & Studio, Instant Film Society, Lollipop Shoppe, Lone Star Wind Orchestra, Naked Girls Reading, Observe Dallas, Shag Carpet, The Sixth Floor Museum, The Urban Fabric, TunnelVisions, Wordspace Dallas, and the 45 Suicide Prevention Fund, as well as hosting performances by numerous musical acts, including the Deathray Davies, Telegraph Canyon, Unconscious Collective, Whiskey Folk Ramblers, Yells at Eels, and many more.

Holiday Presence 10

On Thursday, December 4th from 7:00pm to 10:00pm, Kettle Art Gallery proudly presents their tenth annual holiday gift show “Holiday Presence 10” featuring small works and unique, artisan-crafted gifts made exclusively by local artists. Works by Judith Lea Perkins, Brad Albright, Monica Moody, Johnny Hawkins, Emily Hawkins, Clint Scism, Megan Petasky, Clay Stinnett, Sarah Zamora, Michael Francis, Jody Pham, Cabe Booth, Corey Godfrey, George Wallace III, Michelle Marie, Richard Sharum, Cheryl Baker, Justin Clumpner, Jennifer Lafleur, Brian Crawford, Darlene Schaper, Larry Carrey, Patricia Rodriguez, Nick Glenn, and more will be featured. Most pieces will be available for under $100.00.

Kettle Art Gallery began its mission in 2005; a year that also introduced Art Conspiracy and The Lollipop Shoppe. There must have been something in the air that year as these three preeminent showcases have all evolved into forces with which to be reckoned. From the very beginning, Kettle has maintained two overall objectives: to offer local creatives a place to exhibit; and to rejuvenate the artistic roots of the Deep Ellum neighborhood. Throughout the years, Kettle has hosted over 140 exhibitions, in various media, featuring only North Texas artists. This averages out to one show every three weeks, with over $200,000.00 going directly into the pockets of local artists.

Join us during “Holiday Presence 10” as Kettle enters their tenth year of celebrating the amazing local artists who make our art scene one of the most vibrant in the country!

DEEP

Kettle Art presents “Deep: Expressions of the Feminine Aura”, opening on November 6, 7:00-10:00pm. This exhibit runs through Saturday, November 22.

“Deep” brings together five female artists with diverse commentaries on the feminine gender, portrayed through a collectively vibrant palette of color and imagery.

Roxanne Mather: “I am a purist when it comes to paint, capturing light with my paint brush and earthy tools. In the fantasy world I create I consider myself a primitive creature from the future and that fantasy is what my body of work encompasses. Greeting earthlings, the Primal Alien has been grounded.”

Corey Godfrey earned a BFA at the University of North Texas in 2008, but has been creating art since she was old enough to teach her siblings how to color on the walls. She is inspired by the soft nature of female sensuality, and accentuates that into her compositions by using craft materials, which are deeply rooted in female history.

Megan Petasky is a 23 year old artist raised in Texas with an immense interest in horror films. Her artwork is a harmony of spindly, macabre, seemingly tormented freaks. After graduating from Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design, she returned to Dallas where she works as a Visual Development Artist for an animation studio.

Emily Hawkins studied fine arts at the University of North Texas and University of Wisconsin. She has been a professional graphic designer since 2006. “Deep” will be her first gallery show as a featured artist.

Harmony Witte’s watercolors utilize vibrant color and strong themes to present glimpses of an alternate reality. Inspired by environment, pop culture, hallucinations, delusions, and daydreams, this other universe is created in moments of hypomania.

Patterns of Passion

Kettle Art proudly presents “Patterns of Passion”, a three-woman exhibit exploring the rhythms, colors, and textures of emotion, featuring new works by Dallas-based artists Corey Godfrey, Aralyn McGregor, and Judith Lea Perkins. Please join us for the opening reception on Thursday, April 17, 7-10 p.m. The exhibit runs through Saturday, May 10.

Corey Godfrey earned her BFA at the University of North Texas in 2008, but has been creating art since she was old enough to teach her siblings how to color on the walls. She is inspired by the soft nature of female sensuality and accentuates that into her compositions by using craft materials, which are deeply rooted in female history. In her current series, she is emphasizing the beauty of patterns and allowing the yarn to take fluid turns and to control when to begin and when to end, much like the impressions found in her dreams.

Aralyn McGregor graduated from the University of North Texas with a BFA in studio art. She taught high school art, volunteered with Dallas Arts organizations including Art Conspiracy and La Reunion’s Art Chicas Program, as well as co-curating charity art shows. In addition to regularly exhibiting her art, she also works for the Nasher Sculpture Center. Her latest body of work explores figurative abstraction.

Judith Lea Perkins is a professional artist, painter, and printmaker. She earned her Associates Degree of Applied Art in Visual Communication from the Art Institute of Dallas, and has worked in the creative arts field as a scenic artist, muralist, and freelance artist since 1993. Judith is one of the founding members of Kettle Art. She participates regularly with the gallery and has several murals in the Deep Ellum area.

Holiday Presence IX Postponed

Due to the icy, slick conditions created around Dallas/Fort Worth late last week, Kettle Art Gallery felt it necessary to postpone the official opening of Holiday Presence IX.

The staff felt that it was better for everyone to arrive safely to celebrate the holiday, than risk the potential of accident & injury trying to make it out for the show.

The wait will be worth it as your favorite local artists will be on hand Thursday night to welcome one-and-all & officially kick-off Holiday Presence IX. So, join us Thursday night for what promises to be a jolly fun time for all!

Till then, stay safe and warm!

“I Can See Myself”
9.20.12 – 10.13.12

Curated by Corey Godfrey and Erica Felicella

How does one view oneself? What do you see? How do you feel people see you? These are the questions we ask ourselves every day.

“I Can See Myself” is an exploration that really captures the essence of self reflection.

The ability to exemplify this concept was the driving force that defined my desire to curate this show with Erica felicella.

What happens when you ask a group of artists to look in the mirror?
