Opening Reception – 3.7.13 7pm-10pm
Show runs through 3.23.13

About the Artist:
Derek Rankins pays homage to his roots in rural Southeastern Kansas. In 2004 he worked as a lab technician for the last remaining Kodachrome processor until which he moved to Texas to pursue a photography career. In 2006, Rankins received his Bachelors in Photography from Texas A&M University-Commerce and began developing his personal work over the next five years. Derek is now pursuing his Master of Fine Arts degree in Photography at the University of North Texas in Denton with an expected graduation date of May 2013.

About the Work:
“The Part and The Whole” is a visual representation of how I interpret my surroundings and how I interact with these parts of culture. It is a comprehensive collection of miscellanea and explores the possible narratives that take place. As I have attempted to visualize the sum of its parts, I have come to see that there is no whole, that the parts are infinitely divisible.

… Unlike the Kettle fundraiser there is no standard sizing or pricing. Artists simply bring in a piece of their work, and name their price. The idea for this show was inspired by the many institutions and causes that ask for donations but rarely, if ever, give back to participating artists. Sometimes it seems those with the least tend to give the most :/

At any rate, here’s a chance to get original art and show some love & support to those who are kind enough to share. Thank You!

Kettle Art opened in November of 2005 with the intent of reviving a neighborhood in decline. In bringing the Deep Ellum area ‘back to it’s roots’ the gallery also offered countless Texas based artists a place to show. With an ‘inclusive as opposed to exclusive’ attitude, uncommon in most galleries at the time, the overall mission has been achieved.

Kettle Art, in it’s present location, will be closing in late spring. We see this as a great opportunity for expansion of ideas and creativity to benefit our community.

Our concluding schedule at 2714 Elm is as follows:

February 9, 2013 – For the Love of Kettle – One night Only!
Opens February 16 – For the Love of Artists – Feb. 23, 2013
Opens March 7 – Derek Rankins The Part & the Whole (Thesis Show) – Mar. 23
Opens March 28 – Justin Terveen – April 13
Opens April 18 – Past Present & Future (a gallery retrospect) – May 4.

This can be seen as the end of an era but may also be viewed as a new beginning. News of our relocation will come once the dust has settled. Please rest assured this is a giant step forward.

45 Fest is an music and art event by Deep Ellum’s 45 Fund to promote mental health for Artists and Musicians. Founded in 2011, 45 Fund was inspired by the suicides of Frankie Campagna and Adam Carter, both from the Dallas based band Spector 45.

45 Fund is a project of the Deep Ellum Community Association

Background: Spector 45 was a Dallas based greaser punk band that captured the pure energy of 50′s Rock n Roll and original 70′s Punk Rock, and kicked it out for today’s audience… In less than 8 years they played over 500 shows and were always happy to perform beyond their North Texas roots. The band formed in 2003 while in high school, recorded five releases and were two time winners of the coveted Dallas Observer Music Awards for ‘best punk band’. These efforts came to a screeching halt January 1, 2011 with the suicide of founder / front man Frankie followed 88 days later by bassist Adam Carter.

What did it mean?

It seemed an easy statement that flowed as he typed. At first, it had no meaning at all. It was just the words; “the road to the store”, “the road to the store”. Over and over, he typed them.

“The road to the store”.

What could that mean?

We go to the store to get what we want, and need.

As in life, we work towards something; some end that we want, need, or hope to accomplish.

In life, we are on a road to a store.

Artist Reception, August 23rd from 7-10pm.

Don’t miss this.
